Varicose veins are medically serious veins that are large, swollen and diseased. They are a sign of chronic venous insufficiency and require immediate medical treatment. Spider veins, like their namesake, often appear as very thin, pinkish veins that look like a web or tree branch. While unsightly veins, in most cases, these spider veins are harmless and usually solely a cosmetic problem.
